There are various techniques that can be applied when protecting molten metal alloys from oxidation and moisture using inert gases during melting. These can range from in-house designs to standardized systems using specialized hardware and gas delivery equipment. This paper will present a comparison of an in-house manufactured system for melt surface protection and the Air Liquide SPAL technology. The costs and benefits that resulted from each approach will be discussed in detail.
