The Bottom Gating of the Investment Cast parts is not a new thing to most of the process engineers in airfoil casting industry. The part configuration and the metallurgical cleanliness of the alloy determined the gating. This became more paramount when airfoil gates were restricted by OEM.

Due to more and more stringent requirements on the commercial casting, few foundries are already using the proven method of this approach which also allows the part to fill and solidify in a controlled process.

This technical paper will examine the pros and cons of the approach with the help of few examples and filling simulation to show the advantages of bottom filling in aerospace and commercial castings.
