 The Application of Virginia Mullite Flour & Stucco to Investment Casting

Abstract:Virginia MulliteTM is a unique mineral of the alumino-silicate family which has been converted by calcining Virginia KyaniteTM in excess of 1450O C in a rotary kiln. The shape of Kyanite material is acicular in nature and builds strong inter-locking coats for molds used for investment casting. While it has had a long history of applications for refractories, kiln furniture and proprietary shell systems, it is now being used in wider applications in investment casting. The Virginia Mullite material is being used in several commercial and high value added casting foundries for prime and back-up with both flour and stucco.

This technical paper will include thermal and mechanical properties of test bars prepared from Virginia Mullite, silica, other alumino-silicates and zircon. Testing was done by Orton Ceramic an independent testing laboratory. Also, included will be mold preparation and casting results from actual foundry trials.
