Fused silica has a wide range of application inside and outside of the investment casting industry: fiber optics, telescope mirrors, specialty lamp applications, and various military applications. Within the investment casting industry, fused silica is used in ceramic cores and occasionally as a component of the shell system beyond its colloidal counter part. Fused silica does have some advantages over other materials that are used. One of these factors is the low coefficient of thermal expansion across the range of temperatures used for investment castings. Use of a fused silica shell system could potentially offer advantages for the production of cored castings. The scope of this paper covers the initial investigation into the properties of slurry and stucco system comprised of materials readily available in the industry and the properties produced by the system.
