Benefits Associated with Using a Desiccant Based Stucco System for Ceramic Shell Casting

Author:Jack Ziemba, Aristo-Cast, Inc.
Abstract:

This paper concerns the immediate benefits associated with the use of a new desiccant based stucco system called G-2. The inventors of G-2 collaborated with Aristo-Cast Inc., Almont, MI, to test G-2 stucco as backup stucco for these studies. Various castings of different dimensions, geometries, and metals were produced using the new stucco system. The studies demonstrate the accuracy and repeatability of the process. The following points were successfully verified and documented through these trials and will be discussed in the talk.

  • G-2 introduces seamlessly with current rainfall or fluidizing beds – basically just substitute traditional stucco mix with G-2 stucco mix.
  • Has the capability to shorten shell building times by up to 2/3. The shell is dipable every 20 minutes, thus allowing for a completed shell build in an 8 hr. shift. (pattern-to-finished casting)
  • G-2 stucco allows for deep cores and blind pockets to build at the same rate as outside areas of the shells without specialized shell room equipment.
  • Shells built using the G-2 stucco system can be autoclaved or flashed fired with no ill effects.
  • G-2 is compatible with most prototype pattern materials
  • Fragile sprues are easier to immerse in fluidizing bed due to lighter density of G-2 stucco - less breakage.
  • Due to lighter density of G-2, the shell room generates more shells per pound of G-2 than with traditional stucco.
  • G-2 stucco system can handle a wide spectrum of metals. Non- reactive metals as well as reactive metals work well with G-2.
  • Easy knock out
  • G-2 has the no additional hazardous waste issues over traditional stucco systems.
  • Capability to produce more castings without existing shell room space.
  • Lower scrap rates should there be a problem with a wax or sprue design - fewer shells at risk
  • Improved customer service by reducing time spans needed to ship parts.
  • Just–in–time shipping capabilities.
  • G-2 stucco allows the operator to run higher humidity in the shell room, which reduces heating and cooling costs.
  • Higher pricing may be justifiable due to quick turnaround service that is provided to the customer.
